Ruth worked it out about a year in, at a wedding, and it went through her like cold water.
Somebody she had not seen in a long time was very pleased to see her, and they talked for six or seven minutes about nothing much, and near the end this woman said one small thing, in passing, kindly, in a tone of complete confidence, and it was wrong.
Not wildly wrong. Wrong in the way things go wrong when they have been through five people. One detail out of place, one thing in the wrong order, and the whole meaning of it changed by maybe forty degrees.
And Ruth started to correct it, and got about half a sentence in, and then simply stopped, and said something else, and let it stand.
Here is why she stopped, and she has thought about it a great deal since.
The correction would have gone to one person, at a wedding, in a conversation, on a Saturday. The original had gone to a number she cannot even estimate, over about four months, with the momentum of something new.
And a correction is boring. That is the whole mechanism and there is nothing sinister in it. A first telling travels because it is news. A correction travels about eleven feet, because there is nothing in it for the person carrying it, and people are not villains for that. She would not carry somebody else's correction either. Nobody would.
So there is a version of Ruth walking around in the heads of a great many people and she has no access to it and no way of amending it and never will.
There is a piece of this she keeps straight and I am going to keep it straight too.
The version is wrong in its details. It is not wrong that something happened, and it is not wrong that it cost other people something. She is not sitting at that wedding as a woman falsely accused. She is a woman accurately known and inaccurately described, and those are different things, and only the second one is a thing she might have wished to correct.
And this is where I stop writing about Ruth, because there is a version of you out there.
I am not going to ask what happened. I am not going to tell you the people carrying it are wicked, because they are not, they are just people.
Two readings of the same person
I want to give you the plainest sentence in the Bible about the difference between how you are read by people and how you are read by God. It is 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit put it in the record about a household that had read a man wrong with total confidence.
For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7
Most people use that verse to mean God is not fooled by good looks, and that is in there, and it is the smallest thing in it. The Holy Spirit put a much larger thing in the same sentence.
Look at the structure. There are two readings of one person happening at the same time. Man's reading, which is of the outward, meaning the visible, the reported, the part that shows. And God's reading, which is of the heart.
Both readings exist. The verse does not say the first one goes away. It says which of the two is the true one.
And it was written about a situation almost exactly like yours. Seven sons had been read one way by a whole household, and the reading was confident and public and unanimous, and it was also wrong, and nobody in the room had any idea. It took God saying it out loud for anybody to know there had been a mistake.
So take that at the wedding, in the six minutes. You are being read correctly by the only one whose reading is final, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who searches it and knows it and has not been misinformed.
And here is the freedom in the verse, which took Ruth another year to find.
You are not responsible for the accuracy of a story you cannot reach. That is not a duty and never was. Scripture puts the true reading in God's hands, and the Spirit of God has never once had to be corrected about anybody, and no version of you is walking around anywhere that He is confused by.
Here is the turn.
You have been carrying an assignment nobody gave you: getting the account right in the heads of people you cannot reach. That is why weddings are tiring. That is why a six minute conversation costs you the rest of the afternoon. It is not vanity. It is a duty you invented because the alternative felt like agreeing with something untrue.
There is a third option and 1 Samuel 16:7 is it. Let the outward reading be outward. It is not the reading that decides anything, and the true one is already made, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds it, and He is not going to be corrected in three weeks at the foot of page two.
And keep the honest half in your hand. The details being wrong does not mean nothing happened. Where something can be put right with the people who actually carry it, put it right, without conditions and without expecting it to travel any further than the room it is said in. Say it because it is true, not to fix a story.
So take this plainly. You are read rightly today, because the written word says the Lord looketh on the heart and Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the Holy Spirit knows the whole of it and has never once been misinformed about you.

If living inside a version you cannot amend has started to sound like everyone would be better off without me in the story at all, that is not a thing to carry alone. Say these out loud over your written name. The right to stand was not issued by a telling and cannot be edited by one: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, look at your name a moment, and leave the outcome with Him.
