Get Up Is Not a Threat

This message is for hope when the words get up have started to arrive in the tone of an accusation

There are two words that make Meliame's shoulders go up before she has consciously heard them.

Get up.

It happens in ordinary conversation. Somebody says it about something completely unrelated, a chair, a bus, a child on a floor, and there is a small physical response somewhere under her collarbone that has nothing to do with what is being discussed.

She knows exactly where it comes from and she has never told anybody, because saying it out loud would make it sound like a bigger thing than it is, and it is not a big thing, it is just a tone.

The tone belonged to a person. It was not shouted. It was said with a kind of tired patience, from a doorway, more than once, and it meant: again, and how long is this going to go on, and I am running out of ways to say this to you.

And now, years later and a long way from that doorway, the phrase carries the tone with it wherever it goes, including into the pages of a Bible.

That is the part that costs her most. Because those two words are everywhere in Scripture. Arise. Get up. Stand. And she reads them, and she understands the theology of them perfectly, and every single time some part of her hears them in that voice from the doorway, and the words land as pressure instead of as invitation.

She has never once been able to receive the invitation, and she has never once been able to explain why not, because on paper it is a good invitation and she agrees with it.

And this is where I stop writing about Meliame, because you have a phrase.

It might not be that one. It might be try again, or it is time, or come on now. I am not going to ask whose voice it is in and I am not going to ask what it was about. That is yours and it stays yours.

Get Up Is Not a Threat

Read who is talking and who is listening

I want to hand you a sentence with a get up in it and I want you to notice, before anything else, who it is spoken to and who it is spoken against.

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.Micah 7:8

Notice, first, that the rising is not being demanded of anybody.

It is not an instruction. Nobody in that verse is being told to get up. It is a statement made by a person on the floor about what is going to happen, and it is aimed at somebody standing over them enjoying the view.

The get up in this verse is a defiance thrown at an accuser, and it is not a demand made of the fallen.

That changes the whole address, and it changes it for you today. You are not being ordered up by God, and Micah 7:8 has the falling person doing the speaking rather than the being spoken to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts that sentence in a person's mouth from the floor.

And then look at the second half, because it is where the tenderness is.

When I sit in darkness. Sit. Not thrash, not climb, not strive. It allows for a person who is not doing anything at all, who is sitting, in the dark, and it does not scold that person for sitting. It says the light comes to them there.

Two halves, and most people only ever get read the first one. The rising is real, and it is announced from the floor, and the sitting in the dark is not a failure state that has to be exited before the light arrives. Scripture puts the light in the dark room, and the Spirit of God has never once stood in a doorway with a tone.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn.

The problem was never that you disagreed with the invitation. You have agreed with it for years and it has not helped, and Micah 7 was never the thing at fault, and the Holy Spirit has not been withholding anything from you either. That failure to land quietly became one more piece of evidence against you: even the true things do not work on me.

The true things did not fail. They arrived in the wrong voice, and a sentence in the wrong voice is a different sentence.

This matters more than it sounds, because tone is not decoration on a message. Tone is most of what a person actually receives. The same eight words can be a hand held out or a hand on a clock, and nobody has ever been able to argue themselves out of hearing the second one when that is the one they were taught.

So here is the correction, and Micah 7:8 is the whole of it. When I fall, I shall arise, and when I sit in darkness, the Lord is a light unto me. That is not somebody standing over you running out of patience. That is you, on the floor, saying a true thing out loud, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the nerve to say it from down there.

And this rise does not have to be the one that holds. Nothing in that verse is a promise you are making. It is a description of what God does, said in the present tense of somebody who has not got up yet.

So take this plainly. You are not being pressured, you are being lit, because the written word says the Lord is a light unto me when I sit in darkness and Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the Holy Spirit is in the dark room with you now and He is not tired of this.

Let me say one thing gently before we go on. If the tone has begun to carry a thought that sounds like everyone would be better off without me, that is not a thing to sit with alone in the dark. Tell one person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and wherever you are there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page is instead of that, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in your own voice, and hear whose voice it is. The right to rise was not granted by anybody's patience and cannot be withdrawn by anybody's tone: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing a moment, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Voice in the doorway, you are not the voice these words were written in. Micah 7:8 says when I fall, I shall arise, and the Holy Spirit is saying it over me in the middle of a good thing and not at the end of His patience.
  2. Belief that even the true things do not work on me, you are answered. Micah 7 puts the light in the dark room with the person still sitting in it, and in the name of Jesus I receive a sentence I have agreed with for years and never once been able to hear.
  3. God, You are a light unto me while I am still sitting here. Micah 7 says so plainly and it never once tells me to hurry, and Your Spirit is holding me up today with no vow attached and nobody standing over me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
