She does the cups.
Not the welcome, not the teaching, not the thing she trained for and did for eleven years and was, by every honest account, unusually good at. The cups. She comes early, she fills the urn, she washes up during the second half, and she leaves while people are still talking.
And here is what makes it worth a whole message: she was asked back. Properly. By name, in a room, with the leadership present and the thing dealt with and the door held open on purpose. There was no reduced role offered. Nobody said start small. Nobody said let us see how it goes. They said come back, and they meant the whole of it.
She said yes, and then she went and found the smallest job in the building and gave it to herself.
Watch that carefully, because it is such a quiet move that most people never catch themselves making it. A demotion was issued. Not by the house. By her, in the kitchen, with nobody in the room, and it has been in force ever since.
Ask her why and she will give you a good answer. She will say the cups need doing. She will say she is not chasing anything any more. She will say, if you press her, that she would rather be low than presume.
And underneath all three of those, in a place she does not often visit, is a sentence: I am here on sufferance and the cups are what I can hold without anybody having to decide about me.
I am not going to ask you what happened. Not one detail. This message runs perfectly well without it, and the part I want is not the fall anyway.
The part I want is the kitchen.
Grace is a floor, and the verse puts your feet on it
Romans 5 opens with a sentence built like a staircase, and most of us stop on the first step because it is the one we were taught.
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Romans 5:2
Access, then standing, then rejoicing. Three words and each one is doing separate work, and the middle one is the word the cups are hiding from.
Access is the getting in. That is the step everybody knows: peace with God, the door open, the account clear. That is pardon, and pardon is enormous, and pardon on its own leaves a person in the doorway.
Then comes wherein we stand. That is not a doorway word. That is a floor. Grace in Romans 5:2 is not described as a gift handed to a visitor, it is described as the ground under the feet of somebody who lives there, and the verb is present and continuous and has nothing conditional attached to it anywhere.
And then rejoice, which in that verse is a shout rather than a mood. Paul does not put it there as a suggestion for people who feel up to it.
So here is where the kitchen meets the text, and I want to be precise about it because precision is what actually sets a person free here. You are standing on grace right now, not visiting it, and Romans 5:2 puts your feet on it in the present tense while the Holy Spirit holds you there without one reference to your last four years.
Notice the mechanism, because this is doctrine you can put weight on. The standing is not produced by your steadiness. It is produced by whom, by Him, by the one named at the start of the verse. Which means the floor does not thin out on your worst week, because the floor was never made of you.
You have been offered a place and you took a corner of it, and that is the whole of the problem, and it is fixable this morning. Scripture never once offers a partial reinstatement, and the Holy Spirit has not been running a probation department behind the scenes while the verse said otherwise.
Now let me name the thing that keeps the cups in her hands, because it is not laziness and it is not false humility either.
It is that the small job cannot be taken away. Nobody reviews the person who does the cups. Nobody has an opinion about the urn. If you never take up your actual place, nothing can ever be removed from you again, and a person who has already lost something once will pay a great deal for that.
That is not humility. That is insurance, and it costs a whole house the thing God put into your hands to carry.
Here is the turn, and it is a decision rather than a feeling, which is the good news, because feelings have been no help to you at all in this.
You are going to stop enforcing a demotion nobody issued.
Not by making an announcement. Not by asking for anything back. Not by explaining yourself to a single person, because there is no one to explain it to: the house never demoted you, so there is no ruling for the house to reverse.
You have already been reinstated, fully, and the reinstatement did not arrive in installments. Romans 5:2 puts access and standing in one breath with nothing between them, and the Holy Spirit has been standing you up on that floor every week you spent at the urn.
Now, the honest part. This does not mean you march back into the exact role, and this message is not promising you that. What He does about roles and rooms and years is His to decide and He may answer in His own way and in His own time. Where other people were hurt, that is real and it is theirs, and none of it is being waved through in a paragraph.
What is settled today is smaller than a role and far bigger than one. You are not here on sufferance and you never were, and Romans 5:2 makes the floor under you His work rather than yours, and the Holy Spirit is not administering a quiet review that Scripture knows nothing about.
So: keep doing the cups if the cups are genuinely yours. Plenty of people wash up out of pure love and it is holy work. But do them from the table, not from the corner, and stop using them as a place to hide from a decision that was already made about you.
One plain word before the end, because a person can hold a small job for years and get very tired inside it. If any of this has taken you near the thought that the house would run more easily without you in it, that is not a thought to carry to the kitchen. Tell one person today, out loud, and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. Wherever you are there is a line and somebody is awake. Romans 5:2 says you are standing on grace this minute, His Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting in the chair. The place was not extended to you as a kindness and cannot be withdrawn as one: it is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay where you are, and leave the outcome beyond them with Him.
- Small job I gave myself, you are not my place and I did not receive you from God. Romans 5:2 says I stand in this grace, so I am standing on a floor and not waiting in a doorway, and the Holy Spirit is putting me back where I was actually put.
- Fear that says take nothing they can take away again, you are answered and you are dismissed. In the name of Jesus I am not here on sufferance, because Romans 5:2 gives the access and the standing in one breath and never once puts a probation between them.
- God, You set the floor down Yourself and the standing was never made out of me. Romans 5:2 says I rejoice in hope of Your glory, so I am restored, in the house and in my place, now, and Your Spirit is the one who sat me at this table.
