The Name LostEphesians 1:6

He Has Not Changed What He Calls Me

This message is for an identity held by God while a room has quietly revised its version of your name

In one week Ngozi was called two different things and both people meant it.

On the Tuesday, at a meeting she should probably not have gone to, somebody used a word about her in the third person while she was four feet away. Not cruelly. In passing, as a way of identifying which person was being discussed. It was a compressed and slightly cold word and it was doing the job of a name.

On the Friday, alone, at about six in the morning, she was reading and a sentence went into her like a nail. It was one of those ordinary phrases that has been in front of a person a hundred times and then one morning is not ordinary at all. And what it called her was not the word from the Tuesday.

Here is what she noticed, and it is the reason this article exists.

She lived out of the Tuesday word for the rest of the week.

Not by choosing to. She would have said, if asked, that the Friday sentence was true and the Tuesday word was a person being careless. She believed that. She could have argued it well.

And she still walked into a room on the Saturday holding herself the way the Tuesday word holds a person: slightly braced, slightly smaller, arriving with an implicit apology and leaving before the end.

Because a thing said about you by a room has a weight that a thing read alone does not, and everybody knows this and almost nobody says it. The room's version arrives with witnesses. The other one arrives with nobody, at six in the morning, and has to be taken on its own.

And this is where I stop writing about Ngozi, because you have been called two things as well.

I am not going to ask what the room said. That is yours and it stays yours.

He Has Not Changed What He Calls Me

Where the acceptance is kept

I want to give you a short phrase and then show you what it is fastened to, because the fastening is the whole reason it holds.

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.Ephesians 1:6

Accepted in the beloved.

Not accepted on review. Not accepted pending. And crucially, not accepted in yourself, which is where every version of this you have tried to believe has quietly been located and is why it has never survived a Tuesday. Ephesians 1 puts it somewhere else entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on the place it is kept.

In the beloved. The acceptance is held inside somebody else, and what happens to it is whatever happens to Him, and nothing that a room says about you reaches into that place.

And look at the first half of the verse, because Paul tells you what it is all for: to the praise of the glory of his grace. The whole arrangement exists to display something about God rather than something about you, which means it cannot be adjusted according to your week without wrecking its own purpose.

So take that where you actually walked in on the Saturday. You are accepted in the beloved right now, and Ephesians 1:6 says God made it so, and the Holy Spirit is the one who seals that in a person, which is exactly what the same chapter says a few verses later.

Now the honest part.

Ephesians 1:6 does not say the room revises its word. It says nothing about the meeting, or about the person who used it, or about whether they will ever think differently. That is not the offer, and any message that promises it is trading a certainty for a maybe.

What is on offer is that the acceptance was made, past tense, and made in Christ, and the written word puts it out of reach of Tuesdays. The Spirit of God has been holding it there since long before that meeting.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn.

You do not have a belief problem. That is worth saying clearly, because you have been quietly accusing yourself of one for a long time. You believe the Friday sentence. You could defend it. Ephesians 1 is not asking you to believe harder, and the Holy Spirit has never once graded anybody's conviction. The trouble is not doubt.

The trouble is that the room's version arrives with witnesses and the true one arrives alone, and weight is not the same thing as truth, and nobody ever taught you to tell them apart in real time.

So here is what to do with that, and it is not to try harder to feel accepted. Ephesians 1:6 does not ask you to generate the acceptance or to feel it into existence. It reports something already made, in Christ, for the display of God's own grace, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has sealed it, and none of that is being kept in your Saturday.

And the honest limit stands. The word from the meeting may never be revised. You are not being promised that it will be, and you do not need it to be. What you are being handed is that the naming that decides who you are was done elsewhere, in somebody else, by God, and Christ is in you and you are in Him, and Ephesians 1 says it was made to the praise of the glory of His grace, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on it.

That is worth carrying into a Saturday deliberately. Not as a feeling to work up on the way there, which is what you have tried and which is why arriving has been so tiring. As a fact about where a thing is stored. You can walk into a room that has revised its word about you and be entirely undamaged by the revision, not because you are strong, and not because you have talked yourself round, but because the thing being revised out there was never the thing holding you up.

Let me say one thing gently before we go on. If living out of the room's version has begun to sound like everyone would be easier without me in it, that is not a thing to carry alone at six in the morning. Tell one person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and wherever you are there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page is instead of that. The written word says you were made accepted in the beloved, the Holy Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud after your own name. The right to your name was not issued by a meeting and cannot be revised by one: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay quiet a moment, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Word used about me in the third person while I was four feet away, you had witnesses and you were never a test result. Ephesians 1:6 says he hath made us accepted in the beloved, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on that and not on you.
  2. Belief that I have a doubt problem, you are answered. Ephesians 1 puts the acceptance in Christ and not in how convinced I felt on a Saturday, and in the name of Jesus I stop mistaking weight for truth.
  3. God, You made this and You made it in the beloved, so it is not being kept anywhere a room can get to it. Ephesians 1 says it is to the praise of the glory of Your grace, and Your Spirit is holding me today whether or not that word out there is ever revised.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
