The Name They Stopped Saying

Malosi heard the whole story told in a room he was standing in and his name was not in it.

It was not malicious. It was somebody explaining, to a visitor, how the thing had come about. Six or seven minutes, told well, with the important parts in the right order.

And the part he had done was in there. It was described accurately. It was just described without an author. It happened. It came about. There was a decision made. The passive voice did all the work, four or five times in a row, smoothly, and nobody in that room except him would have noticed a single thing.

He did not correct it. There was no way to correct it that would not have sounded like a man asking for credit in front of a visitor, and there is very little in the world worse than that.

Here is the specific injury, and it is not vanity.

He does not need to be thanked. He has been in enough rooms to know that most work is done by people who never get named in the account of it, and that this is normal and mostly right.

What has happened is different. The thing is still there. It is being used, every week, by people who benefit from it. And the way the place tells the story of itself has been quietly amended so that the part he did has an outcome and no origin.

And once it is told that way three or four times, it is simply how it is told. Nobody amended anything on purpose. A story gets shorter every time it is retold and the parts that fall out first are the awkward ones, and after what happened, his name is an awkward one.

And this is where I stop writing about Malosi, because you have listened to something be described without you in it.

I am not going to ask what happened, and I am not going to promise you your name gets said again.

Cut into a hand

I want to give you the strongest image in Scripture for a name that is kept, and I want you to notice what surface it is kept on.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

Graven. Cut in. Not written, which can be revised, and not spoken, which can be retold shorter. Cut, into a surface, permanently, by an act that damages the surface it is cut into.

And look at where. Not on a wall. Not in an account somewhere that gets told to visitors. On the palms of His hands, which are the part of a person that is in front of them constantly, in use, unavoidable, seen every time anything is done.

The line before it is what makes it land, because that context is exactly yours. The people had said the Lord hath forsaken me and my Lord hath forgotten me. It is a complaint about being left out of somebody's account, and the answer is not a reassurance. It is a demonstration of where the record is physically kept.

So take that in a room where the story is being told without you. You are graven on the palms of His hands, and Isaiah 49:16 says the cutting is done and permanent, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a person standing in a room saying nothing.

Now the honest part, because you would not trust this page without it.

Isaiah 49:16 does not say the room starts saying your name. It might, in a few years, when what happened is further away. It might not, ever. Stories go the way they go and nobody in that building is going to convene a meeting to restore an origin, and I am not going to hand you a hope I do not have.

What is on offer is a different kind of record, kept on a different surface, by somebody who does not shorten anything in the retelling. The written word puts it in His hands, and the Spirit of God has never once told the story without you in it.
