The Second HalfPsalm 16:11

A Life Built Around One Thing Never Happening Again

This message is for a future that is not constructed entirely out of preventing a repeat

She only saw it because somebody asked her an innocent question.

They were walking, and the other woman was making conversation, and she asked why she had taken the job she had taken, since it was plainly below what she could do and everybody knew it.

And she gave the answer she always gives, which is that it suits her. And then, about four steps later, she heard the real answer arrive in her own head, fully formed, as though it had been waiting years for somebody to ask.

She took it because nothing like that can happen in it.

And once that sentence was in the air, the rest came with it, and she said the walk back was one of the strangest hours of her life, because she could see the whole structure at once.

The job. Chosen for its ceiling, not for its work. The town she lives in, which she moved to for reasons she gave everybody at the time and which were all true and none of which were the reason. The friendships she keeps at a particular depth and no further. The fact that she has not applied for anything in six years. The way she handles money, which is not really about money. The reason she never volunteers for the thing at the front.

Every single one of those, individually, is a sensible decision that a reasonable person might make. She could defend any of them at a dinner table.

Together they are one decision, made once, and everything since has been construction.

I want to be gentle here because this is not a fault and she is not foolish. Something happened, and it was bad enough that a whole life got organized around preventing a repeat, and that is not weakness. That is what a person does after a fall of any kind, and it works, in the sense that the thing has not happened again.

But look at what it costs. If the whole aim is that one thing never happens, then the very best possible outcome of the rest of your life is that nothing occurs.

That is a strange thing to be aiming at. Nobody would choose it out loud. And she has been living it for six years without ever having chosen it once.

I am not going to ask what happened. Not one detail. This message needs the structure, and God already has the rest.

A Life Built Around One Thing Never Happening Again

The verse shows a path rather than defending a position

Psalm 16 ends with a sentence that does something very specific with direction.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.Psalm 16:11

Shew me the path. Not protect me in the place I am standing. Not keep the thing from happening. The request is for a route, and a route is something you can only use by going along it.

And read what is at the other end of the sentence, because the psalm is unembarrassed about it. Fulness of joy. Pleasures for evermore. That is a verse about abundance and not about safety, written, incidentally, by a man who spends the first half of the same psalm talking about preservation.

He asks for both. He is not naive. But when he describes what he is actually being given, he does not describe a wall. He describes a path with joy at the end of it.

Here is what that puts in front of you this evening. You are being shown a path and not issued a defensive position, and Psalm 16:11 has the route as the gift itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a person out of an arrangement she never consciously agreed to.

Now notice the mechanism, because it matters for somebody who has built what you have built. A path is not a guarantee. You cannot be shown a path and stay where you are; being shown it is only useful if you move along it, and moving along it means the ground ahead is not yet known to you.

That is the exact thing your whole structure exists to prevent.

Which means the structure is not neutral. It is not simply caution. It is, without you ever intending it, a settled arrangement that makes the one thing in that verse impossible, because a path cannot be walked by a person whose entire design is not to move.

And here is what I will not do. I will not tell you the thing cannot happen again. I do not know that, nobody does, and a message that promised it would be lying to you and you would smell it.

What I will say is this. You are held on the path itself and not only in the place where nothing occurs, and Psalm 16:11 puts fulness of joy in His presence rather than in the absence of trouble, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a guaranteed route before He walks with you on it.

Psalm 16 does not remove the risk. It relocates the safety. The safety in that verse is a person, not a position.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is one piece of the structure and not the whole of it, because the whole of it would frighten you and rightly so.

You are going to take one thing back out of the arrangement.

One. Chosen by you, this week. The application you have not sent. The friendship you have been holding at a set depth. The thing at the front you never volunteer for. Something that only exists in its current form because of the decision made once, six years ago, that everything since has been built on top of.

You are held whatever comes of it, and Psalm 16:11 puts the fulness in His presence rather than in an outcome, and the Holy Spirit has been walking beside a woman for six years who thought she was standing still for good reasons.

And let me hold the line honestly. This is not a promise that nothing happens again. It is not a promise of scale, or of a return of anything, or that the second half looks like the years before. What He does about all of that is His to decide and He may answer in His own way and in His own time.

Nor is a quiet life the problem here. If your second half is small and steady and you would choose it freely, that is a good life and God is not disappointed with it. The trouble was never the size. The trouble is that nobody ever chose it, and a structure decided everything.

What is settled today is that you are on a path rather than in a position.

One plain thing before we finish, said quietly. If six years of building has taken you anywhere near thinking that a life where nothing happens is not really worth much, that is not something to walk home with alone. Tell one person today, out loud, and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. Wherever you live there is a line and somebody is awake right now. Psalm 16:11 says there is a path and fulness of joy at the end of it, His Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where the step put you. This life is not a reward for nerve and cannot be withdrawn for being afraid: it is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Arrangement built around never again, you are not a life and I am not living inside you. Psalm 16:11 says thou wilt shew me the path of life, and a path is walked and not held, and the Holy Spirit is the one showing it.
  2. Aim that makes nothing happening the best possible outcome, you are answered and you are overruled. In the name of Jesus I am not finished and this is not a consolation, because Psalm 16:11 says in thy presence is fulness of joy and puts the fulness in a person and not a position.
  3. God, You mark the way rather than stopping the sea, and You never once asked me to stay tied up to be safe with You. Psalm 16:11 says at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore, so there is more ahead of me and it begins today, and Your Spirit is the light on the headland.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
