The Second HalfJoel 2:25

Not a Quieter Version

This message is for a future that is not merely a careful, reduced edition of the life you had

She would tell you she has made peace with things, and she means it, and there is even a version of it that is true.

Here is what it looks like from outside. She is calm. She is reliable. She does not chase. She has a job that suits her and does not require much of her, and a small circle she is genuinely fond of, and a Saturday routine she keeps to.

Here is what it is from inside.

Some time after everything happened, without any moment she could point to, she made a decision. It was never spoken and never written down and she has only recently been able to name it at all. The decision was this: I am going to want less from now on, so that nothing can ever be taken from me like that again.

It is a good strategy. That is what makes it so hard to give up. It works. If you keep everything small, nothing large can be lost, and she has been safe for a long time in a way she was not safe before.

But look at what she has actually built. She has not built a quiet life. She has built a smaller container and called it peace, and every year she checks the walls to make sure nothing has grown against them.

The reason I know this is not contentment is that contentment does not need maintaining. She maintains it. There is real work involved in wanting less: catching yourself when something starts to matter, talking yourself down out of an idea before it gets any weight, saying no to a thing you would love, quickly, before the loving gets a grip.

That is not rest. That is a job.

And she is thirty four.

I want to be very careful here, because there is a version of this message that would do damage, and I am not going to write it. A quiet life is not a failure. Small is not lesser. There are people whose second half is genuinely calm and genuinely small and it is the best and truest thing about them, and God is not disappointed with any of them.

The question is not how big your life is. The question is whether you chose it or whether fear chose it and then handed you the word wisdom to hold.

I am not going to ask you what happened. Not one detail of it. This message needs the decision, not the file.

Not a Quieter Version

The verse is about the years, and about who does the restoring

There is a sentence in Joel that people put on cards, and it is stronger and stranger than the cards make it look.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.Joel 2:25

Two things to notice, and the second one is the one that matters for you.

The first is what is being restored. Not the crops. The years. That is an odd thing to promise, because a year is not a returnable object. Nobody gets a year back. Whatever this verse means, it cannot mean the calendar runs in reverse.

The second is the pronoun. I will restore. The whole weight of the sentence is on who is doing it, and the entire chapter around it is a chapter about God acting rather than a people rebuilding.

Which is exactly where the decision to want less comes apart.

You are not the one holding your own future together, and Joel 2 puts the restoring in God's own hands from start to finish, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to manage your expectations down to a level where He cannot disappoint you.

Now let me say the honest thing about this verse, because I will not use it to sell you something.

It does not promise you the role back. It does not promise the marriage, the reputation, the place, the people, or a single specific thing you lost. Anyone who tells you Joel 2:25 guarantees a particular outcome is reading their hope into a text that is talking about God's own action in His own way and in His own time.

What it does say is that the eaten years are not the end of the accounting, and that the one doing the accounting is God.

And that is enough to take a decision apart, because your decision was not really about outcomes. It was about wanting. You concluded that wanting is what made the loss possible, and you have been reducing the wanting ever since.

You have permission to want again, and Joel 2:25 has God speaking about years He intends to deal with rather than a person managing her exposure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a woman her appetite back for a life she stopped asking for.

Wanting is not the thing that hurt you. Wanting is how a person is alive.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a plan and it does not require you to do anything large.

You are going to let one thing matter again.

Not everything. Not a five year plan. One thing, chosen on purpose, that you would love and have been quietly talking yourself out of, and you are going to stop talking yourself out of it.

And here is the part that has to be said plainly, because you are not a fool and you would spot it if I skipped it. This is not a guarantee that the thing goes well. It might not. Wanting it does expose you, and that was always true, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of comfort that gets a person hurt.

What is settled is not the outcome. What is settled is who holds the years. You are held by God through whatever the thing turns out to be, and Joel 2:25 says I will restore, which is a sentence with His name in the subject and not yours, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at a distance waiting to see whether it works out.

And if your second half is quiet, let it be quiet because you chose it and it suits you, and not because a bad year picked it for you and then dressed itself up as maturity. A small life freely chosen is a beautiful thing. A small life defensively chosen is a container.

What He does with the wanting, and what comes of it, is His to decide and He may answer in His own way and in His own time. What is settled today is that you are allowed to want.

One plain thing before we finish. If the years of keeping everything small have taken you anywhere near thinking that there is not much point to any of it, please do not sit with that alone. Tell one person today, out loud, and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. Wherever you live there is a line and somebody is awake right now. Joel 2:25 says God Himself is dealing with the eaten years, His Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where the step put you. This future is not a reward for being brave and cannot be withdrawn for being afraid: it is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing there, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Decision to want less on purpose, you are not wisdom and I am not keeping you. Joel 2:25 says God restores the years the locust ate, so the accounting is His and not my caution, and the Holy Spirit is giving me back my appetite for a life.
  2. Fear that says keep it small and nothing large can be lost, you are answered and you are dismissed. In the name of Jesus I am not finished and this is not a quieter version, because Joel 2:26 says His people shall never be ashamed and He said it about a ruined year.
  3. God, You put Your own name in the subject of that sentence, and You never asked me to manage my expectations down so You could not disappoint me. Joel 2:25 says I will restore, so there is more ahead of me and it is not a consolation, and Your Spirit is the one who took the shears out of my hand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
