Those Who Remember1 Samuel 16:7

The Half Second Before They Say Hello

This message is for the half second of hesitation in certain people's voices, four years on, and the way it still tells me who I am

It is a sound, and it is almost nothing, and he could pick it out of a crowded room.

Somebody says his name. Then there is a gap. Not a long one. Less than a second, the length of a breath taken slightly out of turn, and then the hello comes and it is a perfectly warm hello and there is nothing wrong with it at all.

That gap is where he lives.

He heard it this morning outside the bakery. A woman he has known since they were both twenty. She was kind. She asked about his mother. She said they must catch up properly. And in the half second before she said his name, he heard the whole thing rearrange itself behind her eyes, the small adjustment a person makes when the file opens.

Four years. He can tell you which people have the gap and which do not. He has, without ever meaning to, sorted everyone he knows into two lists.

The ones without it are why he still goes into town. The ones with it are why he plans which day.

And the worst of it is that they have not done anything wrong. That is what makes it impossible to be angry about, and impossible to put down. Nobody has been cruel. Nobody has said a word. They are decent people who remember a thing that happened, and remembering is not a crime, and he would remember too.

So he carries a speech. Not a written one. A drifting, endless, unspoken speech, assembled in the car and at four in the morning, all the sentences he might say if there were ever a version of the conversation where he could say them. He has never said one of them. He never will. And it plays anyway.

You are safe here. If you have your own version of that half second, and your own two lists, I want to tell you what this message is not going to do, because you have probably been handed the other thing before.

It is not going to give you the speech. No script, no line, no dignified way to raise it, no gentle sentence that reframes you in somebody's mind. I have nothing of that sort and I would not hand it over if I did, because the moment you have the speech you start waiting for the chance to give it, and then you are living even further inside their heads than you are now.

And it is not going to turn them into the villains. They are not. Some of them love you. Some of them have carried their own hard things about that time, and some of them were hurt in ways you may know about and I do not, and if that is true then it matters and it is not being waved away here. None of that is being tidied up in a paragraph.

What is being handed to you is much smaller and it is the only thing that will actually help.

The Half Second Before They Say Hello

Somebody is reading you and it is not them

There is a moment in Scripture where God stops a prophet mid-decision, and the sentence He uses has been quietly working on people ever since.

Samuel is looking at a line of strong sons. He sees the eldest, tall and obvious, and thinks: that is the one. And God says something that is not really about that afternoon at all.

The Lord does not see as man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

Two readings of the same person, happening at the same time, in the same room.

One is done from the outside. It is done quickly, from what is visible, from what is known, from what got said. It is not malicious. It is simply what human beings can do, which is see the outside, because the outside is what is available to them.

The other is done by God, and He is doing it now, on you, and He is not reading the outside at all.

Here is what I want you to sit inside for a moment, because it changes where you are standing. 1 Samuel 16:7 is the written word under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person's footing.

Both readings exist. Only one of them is the truth about you.

The half second is real. I am not going to tell you that you imagined it, because you did not, and being told you imagined something you can hear is its own small cruelty. It is there. It is in the room. And it is a reading made from the outside by someone who only ever had the outside to work with.

And while that reading is happening, another one is going on, permanently, by the only One who has ever had access to the whole file. He is not squinting at you. He is not deciding. He read you a long time ago and He reads you again this morning outside the bakery, and what He sees is a person He loves, in the present tense, today.

Now the part your shoulders have been waiting for.

Their minds were never yours to move. Not once, not in four years, not with the best speech ever assembled at four in the morning. That is not a defeat. It is a release, and it is the same release that was offered to every person in Scripture who was ever lifted: the rising is His, not yours. You do not climb back. You do not earn your way to a better hello. You do not complete a process and get reissued.

You are lifted, and lifting is something done to a person, not by them, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing it.

One thing said plainly, because shame like this can go dark quietly. If it has taken you anywhere near the thought that everyone would be better off without you, that is where a message stops and a human being starts. In the United States, call or text 988 and a person answers. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one real person you tell today, out loud. That is the strongest and most faithful move available, and I would want somebody to make it for me.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it happens entirely inside you, which is the only place it was ever going to happen.

You are going to stop carrying the speech.

Not because you have made peace with anything, and not because they have changed, and not because you have decided their memory does not matter. You are going to put it down because the reading that decides who you are is not being done by anybody in that street, and you have been living for four years as though it were. 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one reading you.

They keep their memory. It is theirs. They are allowed it and they owe you nothing.

And you keep what is actually yours, which is a standing that was never issued by a village, a workplace, a congregation or a family, and cannot be withdrawn by any of them either.

Because you are in Christ, this standing is already yours, given to you and not achieved, and the authority you are about to exercise is His, carried in His name. What He does about anyone's opinion, and whether the half second ever goes, is His to decide, and He may answer in His own way. What is settled here is who is doing the reading. 1 Samuel 16:7 is the written word on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it land in a body that has been braced for four years.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Half second, you are not a verdict and you do not get to name me. 1 Samuel 16:7 says man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart, so I am read by the One who sees, His reading is the one that stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing it.
  2. Memory, you belong to them and you are theirs to keep. In the name of Jesus I take my hands off their minds, because 1 Samuel 16:7 gives the reading to the Lord and their minds were never mine to move, and I bless them as I let go.
  3. God, You are the One who lifts, and the rising was never my own climbing. 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looketh on the heart, so I am held today, in this street, in this town, with nothing explained and nobody's mind changed, and Your Spirit is what lifted me.
