Those Who RememberPsalm 55:22

Turn Your Hands Over

This message is for peace through releasing people you have been holding a case against without meaning to

She found it by accident, which is the only way anybody ever finds it.

She was praying for somebody. A woman from years back, and it was a genuine prayer, and she meant it. And halfway through, without any decision being made anywhere, a sentence came up out of her that had clearly been sitting there a long time: and she never once asked me how I was.

She stopped. She said afterwards that she sat in her kitchen for about ten minutes without moving.

Because the sentence was not new. It was worn. It came out smooth, the way a thing does when it has been handled a great many times, and she had never once handled it on purpose.

So she went looking, and what she found was a file.

Not a real one. Nobody keeps a real one. But it was as organized as a real one: who said nothing when something could have been said. Who was warm in public and never called. Who used a particular tone at a particular birthday, in a particular year, and she could still tell you the year. Who stopped inviting and who never started again. She had dates. She had exact words. She had, without ever having sat down and decided to, been building a case for four years against people who have never once charged her with anything.

That is the part that undid her. Nobody had accused her. Not out loud, not in writing, not to her face. She had run a trial in which she was the defendant, the prosecutor and the clerk, and then she had opened a second file on the jury.

Now hear me, because I am not going to shame a woman for that and I am not going to shame you either.

That file is not malice. It is a wound doing what a wound does, which is keeping score to make sure it never gets caught out again. A person who has been on the ground once will note down every foot in the room. That is not wickedness. That is a body protecting itself with the only tool it had.

But it is heavy. Lord, it is heavy. And you were never meant to be the one holding it.

Turn Your Hands Over

Cast, and what the word actually does

Psalm 55 is written by a man in the middle of a betrayal he cannot get away from, and in the middle of it he turns and says this.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Cast is not a gentle word. It is a throwing word. It is the same movement as a man heaving a sack off his shoulder and onto a wagon, and it is done in one motion rather than by degrees.

And then look at what comes back the other way. He shall sustain thee. Not He shall take it and leave you standing there empty. The word is the one used for holding something up so it does not fall, and it lands on you and not on the burden. He takes the sack, and then He holds the man.

Here is what that means for a woman with a file. You are held up by God and not by your own record keeping, and Psalm 55:22 has the sustaining coming straight back at the person who threw the sack, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a set of hands open that have been closed for four years.

Now I want to be precise about something, because there is a bad version of this teaching and it has hurt people.

Casting the burden is not deciding that nothing happened. It is not pretending the tone at the birthday was imagined; you did not imagine it, and being told you imagined a thing you can hear is its own small cruelty. Some of what is in that file is accurate. Some of it may be worse than accurate.

Casting it means handing the case to the only court with jurisdiction and stepping out of the building. That is not the same as saying there is no case. It is saying it is not yours to try.

And let me say the thing about them, plainly, because the guardrail on this whole subject matters more than the relief. They owe you nothing. Not a phone call, not an apology, not a changed mind. Some of them were carrying their own hard things in that same year, and some of them were hurt in ways you may know about and I do not, and if that is true it is real and it is theirs and nothing here waves it through.

You have been carrying a court you were never appointed to, and Psalm 55:22 puts the whole sack on Him in one motion, and the Holy Spirit will not leave a woman standing empty handed once she has thrown it.

Notice the last clause too, because it is the promise underneath the release. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. Moved there is not about feelings. It is about position, footing, the ground under a person. The file has felt like footing for four years, and it is not. It is a sack you have been standing on top of.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it happens in a kitchen with nobody watching.

You are going to hand the file over.

Not by deciding they were right. Not by rewriting what happened. Not by calling anybody and not by having a single conversation, because this has nothing to do with them and it never did. They are not in the room. They have not been in the room for four years.

You are going to hand it over because it was always addressed to a court that is not yours to sit in. You are sustained by Him rather than by the record, and Psalm 55:22 puts the holding on Him in the same breath as the casting, and the Holy Spirit has been reaching for that sack every single time you shifted it to the other shoulder.

They keep whatever they remember, and you stop keeping what they did. Both halves of that are freedom, and only one of them is the half you came here for.

And what you keep is what was actually given, which is your own footing. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved, says Psalm 55:22, and that footing was never made out of a file, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing you up on it right now.

What He does about those people, and whether one of them ever calls, is His to decide and He may answer in His own way and in His own time. What is settled today is whose court it is.

One plain word before we finish, and I want you to hear it as love. If four years of holding all that has taken you anywhere near thinking that everybody would be lighter without you here, that is not a thing to sit with alone in a kitchen. Tell one person out loud today, and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. Wherever you live there is a line and somebody is awake right now. Psalm 55:22 says He sustains you this minute, His Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hands open. This release was not extended to you as a kindness and cannot be withdrawn as one: it is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands turned over, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Case I have been building without meaning to, you are closed and I am not taking you to court. Psalm 55:22 says cast thy burden upon the Lord, so the whole sack goes over today, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding me up after it lands.
  2. Fear that says keep a record or it will happen again, you are answered and you are dismissed. In the name of Jesus their memory is not my identity and mine is not their sentence, because Psalm 55:22 says the righteous is never suffered to be moved.
  3. God, You take the whole weight in one motion and then You hold the person, which is more than I ever asked for. Psalm 55:22 says he shall sustain thee, so I am held today, I bless every name in that file, and Your Spirit is my footing now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
