Those Who RememberGalatians 1:10

You Do Not Owe Them a Changed Mind

This message is for peace that does not require you to do the work of changing what anybody thinks of you

I want to name a job you are working that does not appear on any form.

You go to your actual work. You do the hours, you do them well enough, you come home. That is the one everybody can see.

And then there is the other one, and it never clocks off.

It is the job of managing what a particular set of people think about you. It has tasks. Real ones. Deciding which day to go into town. Working out the wording of a message four times before sending it. Turning up early to a thing so that you are already sitting down when the room fills, because walking into a full room is a harder shift than arriving before it. Being a bit funnier than you feel. Being noticeably reliable, on purpose, in a way you never used to bother with, so that a picture builds up in somebody's mind over time and slowly replaces a different picture.

That last one is the heaviest task on the list, and you have been doing it for years.

Nobody hired you. There was no interview. And the pay is what makes it worth a whole message: there is none, because the work never finishes. A changed mind is not a thing you can deliver. You can lay out evidence for a decade and a person can still hold what they hold, and you will never be told either way, so the shift never ends and the review never comes.

I am not going to ask you what happened. Not a word of it. This message needs the job, not the file, and I would not open the file if you set it down in front of me.

Let me be careful about the people too, before we go any further. They are not villains here. They are people who remember a thing, and remembering is not a crime, and you have remembered things about others without ever meaning harm by it. Some of them were hurt, and if they were, that is real and it belongs to them, and none of it is being tidied away in a paragraph. They owe you nothing. Not a conversation, not a changed mind, not the moment where it is finally over.

The trouble is not them. The trouble is a job you gave yourself.

You Do Not Owe Them a Changed Mind

Paul asks a question with only one honest answer

There is a sentence in the first chapter of Galatians where Paul stops arguing and asks something straight out.

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.Galatians 1:10

That last clause is sharper than it usually gets read. He is not saying that pleasing people is a small fault. He is saying it is an employment question.

A servant has one employer. That is the whole meaning of the word. He gets his instructions from one place, his wage from one place, and his standing from one place, and the reason a servant can walk through a difficult room with his shoulders down is not that the room approves of him. It is that the room does not pay him.

So the question underneath the verse is not are you a nice person. It is: whose payroll are you on.

And here is what I want to hand you, and I will say it as directly as it deserves. You are already employed, and you were bought and set to work by God rather than hired by a town, and Galatians 1:10 makes that an either or rather than a balance to be struck, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a man off a shift he was never being paid for.

Now notice what Paul does not say, because this is where people get hurt with this verse.

He does not say do not care what anybody thinks. Paul cared enormously. He changed his own behavior all through his letters for the sake of other people's consciences, and he asked to be well thought of where it mattered for the message. Galatians 1:10 is not a license for a hard heart, and a person who uses it that way has misread it and usually hurt somebody.

What the verse settles is not whether you care. It is where your standing comes from, and therefore whether you are obliged to keep working the second job.

You have been trying to earn a verdict from people who are not authorized to issue one, and Galatians 1:10 says the servant of Christ takes his standing from Christ, and the Holy Spirit has been the one holding that standing steady through every early arrival at every half empty room.

And I want to name the wound underneath, because you are not doing this out of vanity. You are doing it because something was taken and you have been trying to rebuild it in the only currency you could think of. That is not a character flaw. That is a person working very hard at the wrong repair.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a resignation rather than a confrontation.

You are going to quit the second job.

Not by going less. Not by getting cold with anybody, and not by giving up on the town; the early arrivals and the four-times-drafted messages can stay if you actually want them, and quite a lot of that carefulness is simply kindness and worth keeping.

You are going to quit the part that was never kindness: the part doing the slow work of building a picture in somebody's head. That piece comes off today.

You are not obliged to change one mind, and Galatians 1:10 asks whether a servant of Christ is in the business of pleasing men and answers its own question, and the Holy Spirit is not holding your standing in escrow until a room revises its file.

They keep whatever they remember. It is theirs, they may keep it as long as they like, and nothing here sets you against them or asks them for a thing.

And you keep what was actually given, which is a place as one of His and not as a project under review. What He does about their minds, and whether the picture ever changes in your lifetime, is His to decide and He may answer in His own way and in His own time. What is settled today is who you work for.

One plain thing before we finish, and I am going to say it slowly. If years of that second job have taken you anywhere near thinking the town would be lighter without you in it, that is the point where a message stops and a person starts. Tell one human being today, out loud, and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. Wherever you are there is a line and somebody is awake right now. Galatians 1:10 says you are His servant this minute, His Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hands turned over. This standing was not extended to you as a kindness and cannot be withdrawn as one: it is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands open, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Second job of managing what a room thinks, you are not my work and I did not take you from God. Galatians 1:10 says if I yet pleased men I should not be the servant of Christ, and the Holy Spirit is walking me off that shift today.
  2. Fear that says I am only clear once they see it differently, you are answered. In the name of Jesus their memory is not my identity, because 1 Corinthians 6:20 says I was bought with a price and the room did not pay it.
  3. God, You are my employer and my wage and my standing, and none of the three was ever issued by a town. Galatians 1:10 asks whose servant I am and I know the answer, so I am held today, I owe nobody a changed mind, and Your Spirit is the rest I stopped trying to earn.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
