The Key Nobody Asked You For

This message is for to move from pardoned to reinstated after handing in privileges that were never requested back

Roy left the key on the bench in the tack room on a Thursday and nobody has ever mentioned it since.

There was no conversation. That is the whole of it. He came in early, before anybody else was about, and he put it on the bench beside the vice, in a place where it would be found, and he went and did his day's work.

He had held that key for eleven years. It was the yard, the barn, the workshop, and the small back door of the house that everybody used instead of the front. It was not a formal thing. It had never been issued. It was given to him one afternoon in the way things are given on a farm, which is to say somebody took it off their own ring and said here.

Nobody asked for it back.

That is the piece he keeps returning to on the drive home. There was no meeting. Nobody sat him down. In the whole of it, from beginning to end, not one person suggested that anything he held should be handed over.

He did it himself, quietly, at half past six in the morning, and he has spent three years being extremely careful ever since. He knocks now. He waits at the gate for somebody to come down rather than walking up. He does not use the back door.

And here is what he could not explain to anybody, and has not tried.

Handing in the key felt like the only honorable thing available. It was the one action he could take that expressed what he thought of himself, and there was, in a bleak way, relief in it. A man who has taken his own privileges off himself cannot be taken by surprise.

That is what it was for. Not honor. Anticipation.

And it worked, in the way that insurance works. In three years nobody has been able to take anything off him, because there has been nothing left to take. He has arranged his own position so low that there is no distance available to fall.

The cost of that arrangement does not show up as pain. It shows up as absence. He is not in the workshop after five any more. He has not been asked to do the thing he was best at, not because anybody decided against it, but because a man who waits at a gate is not standing where the asking happens.

And this is where I stop writing about Roy, because you handed something in.

I am not going to ask what happened. That is yours and it stays yours.

The Key Nobody Asked You For

Which spirit does that

I want to give you a verse that names two spirits and tells you exactly which one produces the behavior we have just described.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.Romans 8:15

The spirit of bondage again to fear.

Look at that word again, because it is the whole diagnosis. It describes a person going back into a position they had already been brought out of. Not a new bondage. The old one, re entered, voluntarily, by somebody who had been given a different standing and did not stay in it.

And what does a person in that spirit do. They anticipate. They take the demotion before anybody can hand it to them, because being demoted by your own hand is survivable and being demoted by somebody else's is not.

That is a key on a bench at half past six in the morning.

So take that where you actually stand at the gate now. You have not received the spirit of bondage again, and Romans 8:15 says so directly, and the Holy Spirit is the one named in that verse as what you did receive instead.

Then the other half, which is the one to sit down inside.

Ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Adoption in the Roman world was a legal act about inheritance and standing, and it could not be undone. An adopted son was not on trial. And the word Abba is a household word, an ordinary intimate word, the word a person uses in the kitchen and not at the door.

The written word puts those side by side deliberately, and the Spirit of God has never once handed anybody back a key.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn.

Handing the key in was not honor and it was not repentance. It was insurance, and it is worth saying that plainly, because you have been calling it something more respectable for three years.

You demoted yourself so that nobody else could. That is the spirit of bondage again to fear, described in Romans 8:15 exactly as it happens, and the Holy Spirit is not the author of it and never was.

And here is what it has cost, which nobody has told you. It has cost that yard three years of a man who used to come up the lane and now waits at the gate. Nobody has said anything, because there is nothing to say to a man who is being careful. And they have missed you, and they cannot get you back, because you are the one who is doing this.

So take the key back. Not with a speech. Ask for it, or better, just start using the back door again on a Tuesday morning like a man who works there, and let the ordinary thing be ordinary.

If it turns out that somebody does want a conversation about it, have the conversation. But do not wait for one, because waiting for one is what the last three years have been.

Let me say one thing gently before we finish. If three years at the gate has begun to sound like this place would run better without me on it, that is not a thought to drive home with alone. Tell one person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and wherever you live there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page is instead of that. The written word says you received the Spirit of adoption, the Holy Spirit is with you in this hour, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting in the chair. The right to this place was not handed in and cannot be handed in: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay sitting a moment, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Key I left on the bench at half past six, you were insurance and you were never honor. Romans 8:15 says ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, and the Holy Spirit was not the one who put me at that gate.
  2. Habit of taking the demotion before anybody offers it, you are answered. Romans 8 names the Spirit of adoption, which in that world was legal, permanent and not on trial, and in the name of Jesus I stop insuring myself against a loss nobody was planning.
  3. God, You gave a household word and not a formal one. Romans 8 says whereby we cry, Abba, Father, and Your Spirit is saying it in me today, at a back door, on an ordinary Tuesday, without a speech from anybody.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
