The Lamp Left Burning in the Courtyard

This message is for to be met in the hour after the guests have gone home, by a God who was in the courtyard the whole evening

Yusuf lights the courtyard lamp at four in the afternoon, before anyone arrives, because a guest should never walk into a dark yard.

He has done it every week for nineteen years. Bread out, mint torn into the pot, the good glasses down from the shelf, the cushions turned so the worn side faces the wall. His courtyard is famous in a small way. People bring their cousins. Somebody once drove two hours because they had heard about the table.

He is a genuinely good host. That is not a performance and it would be unfair to call it one. He loves the noise, he loves the arguments about football, he loves the moment when the youngest of them falls asleep against somebody's arm and nobody moves for twenty minutes so as not to wake her.

And then they go.

There is a particular sound to a courtyard emptying. Chairs going back, sandals on stone, the gate, then the voices getting further away down the street, then the last one, then nothing.

And Yusuf stands under the lamp he lit for other people, and he does not go inside.

He stays there. Twenty minutes, sometimes an hour. Not doing anything. The plates can wait. He stands with his hand on the back of a chair somebody was just sitting in, and there is a thing under his ribs that has been there a long time, and not one of the fourteen people who were in this yard tonight has any idea it exists.

He has never said it. Not to his brother, who tells him everything. Not to the friend he has had since they were six. Not out loud in the dark to himself.

He would not know how to start. That is the honest truth of it. There is no first sentence. He has tried to build one about four times over the years and it always comes out sounding either too big or too small, and neither of those is the truth, so he says nothing, and he lights the lamp, and he tears the mint, and everybody has a wonderful time.

And this is where I stop writing about Yusuf, because you know exactly what hour I am talking about.

Not a courtyard, maybe. A car in a driveway with the engine off. A kitchen at eleven with the dishwasher running. Whatever your version is of the room after everyone has gone. I am not going to ask you what is in it. Not once, anywhere in this message. That is yours and it stays yours.

The Lamp Left Burning in the Courtyard

The name she gave Him

I want to hand you a sentence spoken by a woman in a desert who was in no position to make a theological contribution to anything, and who ended up naming God in a way nobody had before.

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me.Genesis 16:13

Hagar. Pregnant, running, nobody's idea of the person the story was about. She is not at a table. She is not in a house. She is beside a spring in a wilderness at the point in her life where the polite version of her situation had completely run out.

And what she says is not "God rescued me". It is not "God explained it". She says: You are the God who sees me. Genesis 16 is the first place in the written word where a human being gives God a name at all, and the Holy Spirit put that name in the mouth of a woman nobody was following.

Sit with how strange that is as a thing to be grateful for. She had not yet been given a solution. What she had been given was the fact that she had been observed. Somebody had been in the wilderness with her the entire time she thought she was crossing it unwitnessed.

That is the whole of what she needed to name Him by.

So take this into the hour after the guests leave. You are seen in the yard when it is empty, and Genesis 16:13 says God is the one doing the seeing, and the Holy Spirit is not somebody who arrives when the room fills up and leaves with the last of them.

Notice what is not in that verse. He did not require a sentence from her first. There is no moment where God says, tell me what happened, and then I will look at you. The seeing came before the speaking, and the speaking was hers to do or not do.

Which is what makes this a mercy and not a threat. Being seen by somebody who is looking for a fault is the worst feeling in the world. Being seen by somebody who already knows and has not moved is the best one. Scripture puts God in the second chair, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a person rather than merely being read by them.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn.

The unspoken thing has felt, for a long time, like a door you have kept closed on God. As though He is out in the street with the guests and the only way to bring Him in is to hand Him the sentence you cannot build.

He has never been in the street. He was in the yard all evening. He was in the yard before the lamp was lit, and His Spirit has been in it the whole time. The seeing in Genesis 16:13 is not something switched on with a confession; it is a fact about Him that was true while the plates were going round and true while everybody was laughing and true in the twenty minutes afterwards with your hand on the back of a chair.

And this is not asking you to tell anybody. Not your brother, not your oldest friend, not a room, not tonight, not as a condition of anything. Where somebody already knows and has been kind, that is a real gift and worth keeping. It was never the gate. There is no gate.

So take this plainly. You are held in the hour nobody stays for, because Scripture names God as the one who sees and Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the Holy Spirit is doing the holding right now, in a yard with the chairs pushed back.

Before we go on I want to say one thing gently. If what stands under the lamp with you has started to sound like everyone here would be fine without me, that is not a thought to keep in an empty courtyard. Tell one person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you live there is a line and there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page replaces that, and you are worth the call.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the empty room, palm up. The right to be met here was not earned by an explanation and is not forfeited by silence: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay open handed a moment, and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Empty courtyard, you are not evidence that I am on my own. Genesis 16:13 says God sees, and He was standing in here before the lamp was lit, and the Holy Spirit has not left with the last of the guests.
  2. Silence that says nobody could know me and stay, you are answered. Genesis 16 has her naming Him the God who sees before she had one solution in her hands, and in the name of Jesus I stop waiting for a first sentence I cannot build.
  3. God, You were here the whole evening and You are here now. Genesis 16 calls You the God who sees me, and Your Spirit is holding me in the hour nobody stays for, so I am seen, today, open handed, with nothing explained.
