There is a song on the playlist in Priya's car that she has not heard the end of in two years.
She skips it at the same moment every time. Two seconds before the chorus, thumb already moving, eyes still on the road, and then whatever comes next comes on and the car carries on as normal.
Her sister rides with her twice a week and has never once asked about it. Why would anybody ask. A skipped song is a skipped song. Everybody has forty of them.
Except that it is not the song.
It is what was happening the last time she let it play all the way through, and she is the only person alive who knows that, and the knowing has been sitting in the passenger seat for two years being extremely quiet and extremely well behaved.
Here is what nobody sees.
She takes a different route now, and she has a reason ready if anyone ever asks, and nobody ever asks. She sits at the end of the row rather than in the middle of it. There is one particular question that comes up in ordinary conversation about once a month, and she has a small joke she uses for it, and the joke is good, and it works every single time.
None of that is a lie. That is the strange part. She has not told anybody anything untrue. She has simply built a set of very small habits around one unlit room, and the habits have become the shape of her life, and no one has noticed because there is nothing to notice.
The word she would use, if she used a word, is fine. She is fine.
And this is where I stop writing about Priya, because there is a track on your playlist too.
Not that one, necessarily. Something. A route, a chair, a month of the year, a name that comes up and gets handled smoothly. You know exactly which one, and I am not going to ask you what it is, and I want to say that clearly at the top so you can keep reading with your shoulders down: nothing in this message needs to know.

The verse written from inside a thing nobody named
I want to put a sentence in front of you that has been in the Bible for two thousand years, written by a man who had exactly the same problem and refused, on purpose, to say what his was.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9
Paul calls the thing a thorn in the flesh. That is all he ever calls it. He wrote it down, sent it to a whole city, knew it would be read out loud in rooms full of people who knew him, and he never once tells us what it was.
People have been guessing for nineteen centuries. Eye trouble, a recurring illness, a person who would not stop opposing him, something else entirely. Every guess is a guess. The text is not shy and it is not evasive. It withholds the detail deliberately, and the withholding is doing work.
Because if he had named it, then this verse would belong only to the people with that same thing. Name it and you narrow it. Leave it unnamed and it reaches every single reader who has one, which turns out to be all of them.
Now look at what God actually answered. Paul asked three times for it to be taken away. He did not get an explanation and he did not get a removal. He got a sentence in the present tense: my grace is sufficient for thee.
Not will be. Not once you have dealt with it. Is.
So hear this where you actually live. You are already met in the place that has never been said out loud, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 hands that to you without asking one question about it, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that answer to Paul is standing beside you in the car, in the kitchen, wherever you are reading this.
There is a second thing in that verse and it is stranger than the first.
Strength made perfect in weakness. Not strength arriving after the weakness is fixed. Not strength replacing it. Perfected, completed, brought to its full working, in the unlit room itself. Which means the place you have kept covered is not the one part of your life God has been unable to get into. Scripture says it is the exact place where His strength does its most finished work, and His Spirit does not need a preamble from you to begin.
Here is the turn, and it is the opposite of what most people assume.
The unnamed thing has felt, for a long time, like the reason God is at arm's length. Something unresolved, sitting between the two of you, quietly disqualifying. That is the story the quiet tells.
It is the wrong way round. Grace was not aimed at the parts of your life you can talk about comfortably. Those parts did not need it. Grace was aimed, with precision, at the place that has no words yet.
And nothing in this asks you to produce those words. Not to a friend, not to a leader, not to a room, not tonight, not ever as a condition. Where good people already know and have been gentle with you, that is a gift and it is worth having. It has never been the gate. The gate does not exist.
So take this, plainly. You are held today in the exact place you have kept covered, because 2 Corinthians 12:9 says grace is sufficient and says it in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that word into the room with you right now. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and He has not been at arm's length, and He is not waiting for a sentence.
I want to say one more thing gently before we go on. If what has been sitting in the passenger seat has begun to sound like everyone would be better off without me, that is not a thought to carry alone in a quiet car. Tell one person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and there are people awake right now wherever you are. Nothing on this page is instead of that, and you are worth the call.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, palm up. The right to be met here is not something a confession earns and not something silence forfeits: it is yours in Christ, given, exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay open handed a moment afterwards, and leave the outcome where it belongs, with Him.
- Unlit room, you are not a locked door. The written word says grace is sufficient and says it in the present tense, so you are not the one place in my life God cannot come into, and the Holy Spirit is in here with me now.
- Fear that says it would change how He looks at me, you are answered. 2 Corinthians 12 never names the thorn and God never asked Paul to name it, and in the name of Jesus I stop waiting at a counter that was never there.
- God, You have known this the whole time and You have not moved. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says Your strength is made perfect in weakness, and Your Spirit is carrying me in the exact place I have no words for, so I am met, today, open handed, with nothing explained.
2 Corinthians 12:9
