The Unseen FallHebrews 4:13

The Steadiest Person You Know

This message is for the thing you have carried for two years while everyone around you says you are the steady one

"You're the steadiest person I know."

She said it in a parking lot, in the rain, holding a box of files against her hip, and she meant it entirely. It was not flattery. It was the kind of thing a person says quickly on the way to somewhere else, which is exactly why it lands so hard, because nobody rehearses a lie on the way to their car.

He said thanks. He said something about her being kind. He put the last box in the boot and shut it and waved her off and stood in the rain for a moment longer than a person needs to stand in rain.

Two years.

That is the number he has, and he has it exactly, because it started on a specific evening that he can date, and there has not been one day since that he has not thought about it. Nobody knows. Not one person on the earth. He has become extremely good at a particular kind of arithmetic: what he can say and to whom, what a question is really asking, how long a pause can run before it becomes a subject.

And here is the thing that has begun to frighten him, more than the thing itself.

It is not that he might be found out. It is that he might not be. That he could go the whole distance like this, admired, useful, steady, and be buried by people who genuinely loved a man who was not quite there, and that the last two years of him would simply be the first two of the rest.

I am not going to ask you what yours is.

Not in this message, not later on in it, not in a gentle indirect way at the end. I do not need to know and I am not going to guess, and if you have been braced from the first line for the moment when this turns and asks you to admit something, you can put that down. It is not coming.

I only need to know one thing about it, and I already do: that you have been holding it on your own.

The Steadiest Person You Know

Two sentences, and the second one changes everything

There is a passage in Hebrews that runs two ideas together, and almost everyone I have ever met knows one of them and has somehow never been told the other one is attached.

Here is the first, and I will not soften it, because softening it is what has kept people frightened of it.

And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.Hebrews 4:13

Naked. Exposed. Nothing hidden.

That verse has been used as a threat for centuries, and if you grew up anywhere near a pulpit you probably hear it in a certain tone of voice, and the tone says: you are going to be found out. It is the sentence that lives underneath your two years, and it is why you have never once been able to relax. Hebrews 4:16 answers that tone in its very next clause, and the Holy Spirit has never once used it on you.

Now hear what comes next. Three sentences later. Same passage, same writer, one continuous thought.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16

Then.

That word is carrying the whole weight. Not "but". Not "however, if you sort yourself out first". Then. Because you are fully seen, therefore come near with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 is the written word on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a fully seen man toward a throne.

Sit in that for a second, because it is the opposite of everything your two years have taught you.

You have organized your entire life around the belief that being seen and being welcome are opposite things, and that your welcome anywhere depends on the seeing not happening. Every conversation you steer, every pause you manage, every warm thing you accept with a small flinch, is that belief operating. Hebrews 4:16 puts seeing and welcome inside one sentence, and the Holy Spirit has been dismantling that belief from the inside for longer than you know.

And this passage says they arrived together. He saw it. All of it. The evening you can date and everything after it, and He did not turn away, and He did not revise His opinion, and the door He is holding open was never held open on the strength of information He did not have.

There is no reveal waiting for you with God. That is the thing I most want you to hear today. Whatever the reveal is that you have been dreading for two years, it happened already, and He is still here, and the only person in the world who has not seen it is not Him. Hebrews 4:13 says all things are naked and opened unto His eyes, and the Holy Spirit did not flinch at one line of it.

Now let me name your pit properly, and then leave it alone.

The exhausting part is not the thing. The exhausting part is the maintenance. It is being the steadiest person somebody knows while running a second life underneath it, and it is the specific loneliness of being loved for an accurate description of a man who is not the whole man. You are not tired because you are weak. You are tired because you have been doing two jobs for two years, and one of them is a night shift, and nobody has ever offered to take a turn. Hebrews 4:16 offers grace to help in time of need, and the Holy Spirit is the one taking the turn.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is smaller than you feared and it does not involve anybody else.

You are not going to climb back. There is no ladder in this message and there is no process to complete, and nothing here has to be earned before it is yours, because the rising in this is His work and never was yours. That is why it does not depend on how well the last two years went. Hebrews 4:16 makes it a throne of grace and not of review, and the Holy Spirit is the whole of the lifting.

What you are going to do is stop being the only one who knows.

Not tell a person. Not today, not because of this, and not because any message told you to. If there is a safe human being in your life, that is a real gift and it is yours to use whenever you decide to, and it is entirely your decision and nobody else's. Nothing in this article requires it and nothing about your standing with God waits on it.

Today, say it to Him. In the car, in the dark, walking, standing at a sink. Plainly, without the softening, in whatever words you have, and knowing the entire time that you are not informing Him of anything. Hebrews 4:13 had all of it in view already, and the Holy Spirit is in the car with you.

He saw it. He did not turn away. The throne He is on is called a throne of grace, and He named it that before you got there.

One thing more, said plainly and not as a footnote. If carrying this has gone past exhaustion into thoughts of not being here at all, tell a real human being today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will stay on the phone with you. That is not weak faith. It is wisdom, and God is entirely in it.

Declare this over yourself

Now, when you are ready, say these out loud if your voice will do it, or under your breath, or simply agree with them silently, which is enough. The authority in them is not something you have to be good enough to use: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, because you belong to Him. What He does with the consequences and the roads that run out of this is His to decide. Hebrews 4:16 is the written word underneath all three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to speak them.

  1. Hidden thing, you are not my master and you are not my name, in the name of Jesus. Hebrews 4:13 says nothing is hidden from His sight and Hebrews 4:16 says come boldly unto the throne of grace, so being fully seen and being fully welcome arrived in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing me in. I am His today, and I am not holding this on my own.
  2. Shame, you do not get to work the door of a throne of grace. Hebrews 4:15 says I have a High Priest who was tested in every way and is touched with the feeling of my infirmities, therefore the way in stands open and it was opened by Him and never by me. I come near today, and I come near now.
  3. God, You did not look away when You saw it and You are not looking away now, and the silence of two years is broken open here in this room. Hebrews 4:16 says I may come boldly and find grace to help in time of need, so I am seen, I am welcome, I am not the only one who knows, and Your Spirit is the one who brought me in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
